Block 3

This building was erected before 1879. It consisted of slate walls and was originally used as a shed to split the slate. During camp time it served as Block 3, the so called Italian Camp ("Italienerlager"). The block housed Italian militaries. Their quarters was described as a strung-out room with bunk beds on both walls and an oven in the aisle. An extension building at the front had a room with washing basins.

Block 3 also served as detention room for prisoners, who were accused of violating camp rules. These had to carry out extremely rough work. In Summer 1944 the block was abandoned, separated from the fenced-in camp area and used as storeroom.

The building decayed after 1945. It was later demolished and a new wooden barn constructed in most of its place. This barn was pulled down in 2011 to make room for a parking ground for the memorial site. Of the original Block 3 only fragments of the northern wall and the northern extension building with some stairs survived.
